As I sat down with my second plate of food, Penny stretched her arms over her head. Now, I had heard her rant and rave about this place called Simply Southern, but I had absolutely no idea that the quality of the food would be something that couldn’t be conveyed through words.

“A whole plate of barbecue, huh?” Mikael asked.

I shot him a look as I dumped mustard-based barbecue sauce all over my food. “Don’t you even dare. You have an entire plate of cornbread over there.”

He snickered. “Half of it is for Penny. She loves dunking it in her hash.”

I wrinkled my nose as I looked down at Penny’s full plate of hash and rice. “What is that stuff anyway?”

Penny took a gargantuan bite. “I don’t know, but it’s all the baby wants right now.”

“And what baby wants, baby gets,” Mikael said with pride.

“So, are we talking about the wedding over dinner? Or, just enjoying things?” I asked.

Penny wiped her mouth off with a napkin that had been resting in her lap. “No, no. We’re done with logistics for the day. I just wanted to bring you here so that you could experience the greatness that is this place.”

Mikael nodded. “I don’t get out here very often because it stays crowded like this. But, it’s worth the wait every time.”

“You know,” I said as I reached for my water, “when you told me that the wait was over an hour, I was hesitant.”

“And hangry,” Penny said with a giggle.

I rolled my eyes. “But? You’re right. This is worth it.”

She pointed her fork at me. “You, try this. Even if it’s only once. I swear, you won’t regret it.”

The hash on her plate looked like something a child had thrown up before hiding it in their diaper, and part of me couldn’t get over how it looked morphing over the bed of rice she had slathered on her plate. I had to admit, though, it smelled divine. So, I took the tip of my fork and dipped it in the food before bringing it to the tip of my tongue.

“What are you, three?” Penny asked.

“Hey,” I said after licking my fork, “you better get used to it. Do you know how picky of an eater Mikael was as a kid?”

“Don’t scare her off, I haven’t married her yet,” he whispered loudly.

Penny barked with laughter. “I can’t wait for you to tell me all about the hellion that was Mikael as a child. I need to know what I’m up against.”

The second that hash slid down the back of my throat, my entire perspective on life changed. In that moment, I wondered where in the hell that shit had been my entire life. It tasted like the warm comfort of home wrapped up in the hilarity of a family Thanksgiving gathering.

And I dug my fork quickly back into her dish.

“Hey!” Penny said as she swatted at my hand. “Go get your own plate.”

I stood to my feet. “Don’t mind if I do, actually.
